The Import Package feature uploads course content from a Blackboard Exported Course file (.zip) into a course shell. For example, you have exported a fall course. Now you can use the import package feature to “copy” the content in your exported file into the new course.

Note: Never upload an Exported Course package that has been modified since it was created and downloaded. Opening the (.zip) file and changing any of the files in the Exported Course package will result in unstable and unpredictable behavior when the Course is imported.

Important Note: Remember as you are exporting and importing courses, the process may take awhile depending on how many other courses are queued. Please DO NOT submit multiple times or it will take even longer. When you do an import in Blackboard on your home computer, using a residential internet connection, you may experience a delay of 15 minutes or more between the time that you select Submit to submit your import and the time that your import is actually submitted and queued. This is what you will see if that happens: the page with your import check-list will remain displayed, your Submit button will be highlighted in blue, and in the status bar on the lower left of your browser window you will see a message that says “Sending request.” If this happens, do not try to submit your import again, but rather wait until the page changes and you see the yellow banner at the top of the page that indicates the progress of your import. When you see this banner, you will know that your import has been successfully submitted and queued.

  • From the Control Panel
  • Select Packages and Utilities
  • Select Import Package/View Logs
  • Select Import Package
  • Import Package button
  • Select a Package – choose Browse My Computer to locate and select your exported Blackboard course package. (Aren’t sure where your file saved to? Check your Downloads folder or contact us for assistance.)
    Note: the export file will be a compressed .zip file.
  • Select Course MaterialsSelect the check boxes next to the items you want to import
    • To Select All options choose the Select All button, although our recommended settings are below:
      IMPORTANTif you choose to Select All

      • Confirm that the Duration under Settings is UNCHECKED.
      • Must: Content Areas
      • Adaptive Release Rules for Content – If you are using this feature it is recommended that you do not select it as the settings are based on previous students and semesters. However, you may have a need to use the same settings each semester. Remember you can change the rules anytime.
      • Announcementsif you want to reuse old announcements it’s a Must
      • Blogsif you use this feature a Must
      • Calendarif you use this feature a Must
      • Collaboration Sessionsif you use this feature a Must – this feature is different from the Blackboard Collaborate tools
      • Must: Contacts
      • Content Alignments – ignore this option, we do not use this tool at this time
      • Must: Discussion Board
        • Select one of the following additional options:
          • – will just bring in the starter threads, no replies
          • Include only the forums, with no starter posts – will just bring in the discussion topics, no posts included
      • Glossaryif you use this feature a Must
      • Must: Grade Center Columns and Settings
      • Group Settingsif you use this feature a Must
      • Journalsif you use this feature a Must
      • Retention Center Rulesif you use this feature a Must

        • MAKE SURE Duration is NOT CHECKED – if you import the course duration settings your new course will take on the dates of your old course. This causes problems with students having access to your course and problems with your year and thirty days access to the course.

  • Select Submit – ONLY CLICK ONCE
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: This action has been queued. An email will be sent when process is complete.”
  • Import Status Bar – A yellow-orange status bar appears:

    • First Status Message: “Import: course name is Waiting. To access the detailed log, click here
    • Second Status Message: “Import: course name is Running. To access the detailed log, click here

    • Third Status Message: “Import: course name is Complete. To access the detailed log, click here

    • Now, from the status bar, select the here link to review the log to check for Fatal Errors.
      Important Note: If you don’t review the log students will see a message that says the course is being edited and it will confuse them.

      • Some errors and warnings are common but it is always best to review the log and ask us if you have concerns or questions.
  • Still RecommendedCheck your HVCC email for a message from Blackboard Administrator, this message will indicate that the import file has been successfully imported.
    Note: After receiving this email, you may find that it takes a few minutes or longer for all of your course content to appear.
  • Review your new course to ensure that all content has been imported correctly.
