The File tool allows you to select document files from either a local computer drive or from the Course Files area. The attached file can then be viewed as a page within the Course or as a separate piece of content that opens in a separate browser tab.

Please note: that you can only attach one file at a time. To add an additional document create a new file to add another

Set Edit Mode to ON to perform these functions.


Create File


  • From Build Content
  • Select File
  • Select File
    • Enter a Name for your File in the Name field
    • Select Browse My Computer or Browse Course to locate and choose a file to attach
      • Select a Different File: this allows you to just change the file you selected
  • File Options
    • Open in New Window: Choose Yes to have the file open in a new browser window or choose No to have it open within the Blackboard window
      • Note: If the attached file is a Microsoft Office document it will open in the Microsoft Office application in a new window regardless of your setting.
  • Standard Options
    • Permit Users to View this Content: Choose Yes to make the item available to students. Choose No to make the item unavailable to students
    • Track Number of Views: Choose Yes to record the number of times the file is viewed, when it is viewed and by whom
    • Select Date and Time Restrictions: Choose the Display After date/time and/or the Display Until date/time
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of file created.

Edit File


  • Select the Down arrow next to the file title you want to edit
  • Select Edit
  • Select File
    • Choose Select a Different File to change the selected file
    • Make changes to the Name for your File in the Name field
  • File Options
    • Open in New Window: Choose Yes to have the file open in a new browser window or choose No to have it open within the Blackboard window
      • Note: If the attached file is a Microsoft Office document it will open in the Microsoft Office application in a new window regardless of your setting.
  • Standard Options
    • Make any changes to the Item Availability, Track Number of Views, Display After date/time, and/or Display Until date/time
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of file edited.

Delete File


This action is irreversible.

  • Select the Down arrow next to the file item title you want to delete
  • Select Delete
  • A confirmation pop-up message appears, to continue deletion select OK, to end deletion select Cancel
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of file Deleted.
