The Web Link tool allows you to add links to external resources within your course or specific content areas, such as textbook companion sites, museums, etc. When entering a URL, always enter the full web address to the link. For example, enter http://www.hvcc.edu.

Set Edit Mode to ON to perform these functions.


Create a Web Link


  • From Build Content
  • Select Web Link
  • Web Link Information
    • Enter a Name in the Name field (use the name of the website or something descriptive about the website link)
    • Enter the web-address of a website in the URL field (Ex. https://www.hvcc.edu/)
      • You can also link to files and images on your HVCC Web Drive, your URL would look like: http://www.hvcc.edu/~username/syllabus.rtf
  • Description
    • Enter descriptive content/information in the Text field
  • Attachments (Optional)
    • Select Browse My Computer or Browse Course to locate and select a file
      • To attach another file: select Browse My Computer or Browse Course again to locate and select a file
      • To remove a file: select Do not attach, located next to an attached file
    • Optional: By default your file name will display to users, to specify a title:
      • Locate the Link Title column, click in the text box and enter a new link title
  • Web Link Options
    • Recommended Open in New Window: Choose Yes to have the website open in a new browser window or choose No to have it open within the Blackboard window
  • Standard Options
    • Permit Users to View this Content: Choose Yes to make the item available to students. Choose No to make the item unavailable to students
    • Track Number of Views: Choose Yes to record the number of times the URL is viewed, when it is viewed and by whom
    • Select Date and Time Restrictions: Choose the Display After date/time and/or the Display Until date/time
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of Web Link created.

Edit a Web Link


  • Select the Down arrow next to the Web Link title you want to edit
  • Select Edit
  • Web Link Information
    • Make changes to the Name, Web Link fields
  • Description
    • Make changes to descriptive content/information in the Text field
  • Attachments
    • Add attached files, see above Create a Web Link, 2: Attachments
    • To remove a file: select Mark for removal, located next to an attached file
  • Web Link Options
    • Make any changes to Open in New Window
  • Standard Options
    • Make any changes to the Availability, Track Number of Views, Display After date/time, and/or Display Until date/time
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of Web Link edited.

Delete a Web Link


  • Select the Down arrow next to the Web Link title you want to delete
  • Select Delete
  • A confirmation pop-up message appears, to continue deletion select OK, to end deletion select Cancel
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of Web Link Deleted.
