Surveys allow instructors to gather feedback from students. They are not graded.


Build Survey


  • From the Control Panel
  • Select Course Tools
  • Select Tests, Surveys, and Pools
  • Select Surveys
  • Select Build Survey
  • Survey Information
    • Enter survey information in the Name, Description, and/or Instructions fields
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: name of survey created.

 Question Settings


  • From the Survey Canvas page
  • Select Question Settings (located on the right-hand side of the page)
  • Choose and set question setting options:
    Important Note: It’s best to set these options prior to building a survey so all options are available to you as you create questions, etc.
  • Images, Files, and Web Links
    • Add images, files, and web links to individual feedback: select the check box to be able to add images, files, and web links to feedback
    • Add images, files, and web links to answers: select the check box to be able to add images, files, and web links to answers
  • Question Metadata:
    • Select the check box to add categories and keywords to questions
  • Display
    • Select the check box to be able to Specify random ordering of answers.
    • Select the check box to be able to Specify the horizontal or vertical display of answers.
    • Select the check box to be able to Specify numbering options for answers.
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: Question Settings saved.

Create Questions


  • From the Survey Canvas page
  • Select Create Question
  • Select a Question Type from the drop-down menu (go here for details on the different question types)
  • Enter question information in the required fields: Question Text, Options, Answers, Categories and Keywords, and/or Instructor Notes
    Please Note: Options vary among question types
  • Select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: Question created.
  • Repeat the steps to add additional questions

Find Questions


  • From the Survey Canvas page
  • Select Find Questions from the drop-down menu
  • From Browse Criteria (on the left):
    • Expand criteria types to view options by selecting one or more of the following: Pools, Tests, Question Types, Categories, Topics, Levels of Difficulty, or Keywords
    • Choose your criteria for searching by selecting check box(es)
  • From Criteria Summary (on the right):
    • Select the check box(es) next to question(s) to choose them
    • To view an entire question select the preview icon Preview iconbetween the check box and the question text
  • When satisfied with selected questions, select Submit
  • A green confirmation bar appears: “Success: Questions added.
  • Repeat the steps to add additional questions

Upload Questions


Our recommendation is to use Respondus. Respondus is a tool for creating and managing tests, test questions, surveys, and pools that can either be printed or published in Blackboard. For more information and Quick Start Guide, go to http://www.respondus.com/downloads/RespondusQuickStartGuide.pdf.
