When a Student submits an assignment an instructor needs to manually grade it. From the Grade Center, instructors can review, respond, attach their response, and grade the student’s submitted work.


  • From the Control Panel
  • Select Grade Center
  • Select Full Grade Center
  • Navigate to the grade column you want to grade and hover your cursor over the desired cell
  • From the cell, select the Down arrow to open the menu
  • Select Attempt xx/xx/xx (you may have multiple options to view, just select one, you can view others from the next screen)
  • The Grade Assignment page appears (see detailed descriptions and images below)
    • Inline Grading – If applicable enter comments, annotations, etc. in the inline grading pane
    • From Grade Details sidebar:
      • Enter a grade in the Grade field
      • Optional: Enter comments to the user in the Feedback to Learner field (displays to students)
      • Optional: Add an attachment to return to student(s) using the paperclip attachment icon
        • To attach a file: Select Browse My Computer or Browse Course to locate and select a file to attach to your item
        • To attach another file: follow steps above to attach a file
        • To remove a file: select Do not attach, located next to the file
        • Optional: By default your file name will display to users, to specify a title: Locate the Link Title column, click in the text box and enter a new link title
      • Optional: Add Notes (grading notes that display only to instructor): Add any grading comments in the  Notes field
        • Optional: Add an attachment for your records in the Attach File area
      • Select Submit to save grade and grading details
  • Select one of the following options:
    • To navigate to other submissions use the Grade Previous Item or Grade Next Item arrows
    • Select Exit to return to the grade center

  • Assignment instructions – expand to view details on the assignment
  • Add Comments and Annotations – select the Comment function and the annotation tools display. You can comment, highlight, draw, strikeout, etc. To delete an annotation right click on it.  By using the down arrow next to the Comment function you can download a copy of your annotations on the file.
  • View submission inline – the inline grading screen only displays content using the following documents types: Word (DOC, DOCX), PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX), Excel (XLS, XLSX), and PDF. Other file types such as the recommended Rich Text Format (RTF), a download file prompt is presented.
  • Comments pane – add, remove, or edit comments, to delete or edit a comment, select the yellow box to display options.
  • Grading details sidebar – is where you grade the submission, provide additional comments, etc. To enter an override grade select the pencil icon.
  • Attempts and Grade Entry – To enter a grade click inside the grade box. To view another attempt select the arrow next to the Attempt and choose other attempts
  • Rubric – to grade by rubric select either the title of the rubric to open inline rubric criteria or select the View Rubric in a Window icon
  • Feedback to Learner – is a space to add feedback or comments to students
  • Tools – Attach a file tool plus editing tools are available for use in the feedback to learner text editor
  • Add Notes – is a space to add notes to yourself, grading notes.
  • Download File pane – select the download icon to download a copy of the file
