Faculty/Staff Training

Distance and Online Learning Training Workshops

Online Instructor Training open
Pedagogy of Online Course Design and Delivery (PEOCDD) is a workshop for instructors who are developing an online or hybrid course to teach in an upcoming semester using the college’s Blackboard Learning Management System.

For about 20 years now HVCC has had a Quality Assurance protocol that required online faculty to be trained in best practices. Additionally, the faculty contract requires it. And SUNY research has documented that it takes about 150 hours to build a course. Because HVCC is committed to Faculty academic freedom, we train faculty using a minimalist template and spread the training out over a full semester to allow faculty to experiment, build multimedia, and otherwise design a robust course with the help of instructional designers. This is called the PEOCDD or Pedagogy of Effective Course Design and Delivery.

The training is in a hybrid format, we meet remotely once weekly for 2-hours for 7-weeks. Outside of training time, you will be working on developing and building your course. On completion of your course build, you will complete an SUNY Online Course Quality Review (OSCQR) using the OSCQR rubric with an OSCQR review team (ID, Faculty, DC).

Teaching and Learning Certificate Category: 1 Pedagogy, 1 Classroom Management, and 1 Technology (3 hours in each category)

After the completion of all seven modules, you will earn a Blackboard Basics Training Completion Certificate from the Center for Distance and Online Learning office and Center for Effective Teaching credit hours towards a CET certificate.

YuJa Video Platform open
In this workshop you will learn how to use the YuJa Video Platform for pre-recorded video lecture materials. YuJa is a lecture capture or screen recording software that allows you to record your slideshows, screen, or face and voice. It can be used to pre-record the course content to put online. YuJa is best for “asynchronous” learning, meaning you will record the lecture content ahead of time, edit it if need be, and put it in Blackboard for your students to watch.
